Infielder Jimmy Rollins, the Oakland native and a product of Alameda's Encinal High, is coming home - sort of - to the west side of San Francisco Bay.
The Giants have signed the 38-year-old longtime Philadelphia Phillie to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, general manager Bobby Evans confirmed. Rollins will compete for a spot on the bench and earn a base salary of $1 million.
Rollins spent 15 of his 17 seasons with the Phillies and was the 2007 National League Most Valuable Player. He also won three Gold Gloves as a shortstop and a World Series championship ring in 2009.
