Giants setup man shut down with elbow inflammation

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Reliever Will Smith might want to rethink wearing "13" on the back of his Giants uniform.

Last year, with the Brewers, the left-hander missed the first two months with a knee injury that occurred when he tried to remove a shoe while balancing on the other leg. This spring, he will not appear in a Cactus League game until roughly March 20 due to inflammation in his pitching elbow.

Smith has not thrown for four days and will not play catch again for another week, but the Giants are confident the injury is not serious and should not prevent him from being ready Opening Day.
