SAN FRANCISCO – Ryan Vogelsong did not wish to face a batter on Sunday, when the Giants saluted his career in an official retirement ceremony.
A major league mound is a sacred place. It’s reserved for the best and most tenacious competitors in the world.
And Vogelsong felt it deep down when he couldn’t crack the Minnesota Twins roster toward the end of spring training: his tenacious edge, the trait that allowed him to pierce through so much injury and disappointment in his career to reach the most inspiring of heights, was no longer sharp enough to keep going.
