SAN FRANCISCO — Giants reliever Reyes Moronta collapsed to the ground in pain after firing a 97.5-mile per hour fastball to Padres shortstop Luis Urias on Saturday.
Moronta, 26, appeared to clutch his pitching arm and received immediate attention from the Giants medical staff and manager Bruce Bochy. The right-hander walked off the field under his own power, but his dramatic injury led to silence around Oracle Park.
Moronta underwent Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his right elbow after blowing out while pitching for the Giants’ Low-A affiliate in Salem-Keizer in 2013.
It was not immediately clear what part of his arm Moronta injured on Saturday, but if the righty injured his elbow or shoulder, it’s unlikely he’ll return to the mound again in 2019.
