SAN DIEGO — When the Giants opened the season with a four-game series at Petco Park, a slew of Padres left-handers exposed an overmatched lineup that desperately needed reinforcements.
Upon arriving in San Diego for their second of three visits, the Giants’ roster looks dramatically different.
In Monday’s series opener, the results at the plate were quite different, too.
On the shoulders of newcomer Austin Slater, the Giants ripped off nine extra-base hits, slugged three home runs, crushed Padres rookie southpaw Logan Allen and cruised to a 13-2 win.
With five doubles, one triples and three homers, the nine extra-base hits were the Giants’ most since they had nine on June 11, 2017 against the Minnesota Twins.
