Giants react to Bryce Harper’s signing: ‘We’re going to surprise a lot of people’

MARYVALE, Ariz.–When Chris Stratton took the mound Thursday against the Brewers, he hoped it was the last time he would wear his No. 34 jersey.

The Giants starter knew if free agent Bryce Harper signed with San Francisco, the deal would provide Harper with enough cash to buy the only number he’s ever worn off of Stratton.

The Harper sweepstakes finally ended Thursday as he instead chose to sign with the Phillies.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m a little disappointed because maybe I could have gotten a Rolex or something,” Stratton joked.

After making a public push through the month of February to land Harper, the Giants fell short as the six-time All-Star reportedly agreed to a 13-year, $330 million contract with Philadelphia.
