SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The day the Giants signed free-agent outfielder Denard Span, Mac Williamson figured his 2016 season would open in Sacramento, not San Francisco.
“I knew coming in, it would be a long shot for me making the team,” Williamson said of the Giants’ Opening Day roster.
That had been manager Bruce Bochy’s assessment, too. Well, Williamson blasted two home runs in Saturday’s 7-5 loss to Texas at Scottsdale Stadium, both against lefties, and Bochy slightly softened his stance.
Williamson’s first homer was off former World Series MVP Cole Hamels, the next off prospect Donnie Veal.
