SAN FRANCISCO – A Giants minor league prospect from Walnut Creek became the first pitcher in his league’s history to throw a nine-inning perfect game on Tuesday.
Domenic Mazza, a 22-year-old right-hander, retired all 27 batters he faced while pitching Low-A Augusta to a 9-0 victory at Lexington, Ky.
It was the first nine-inning complete game in the history of the South Atlantic League, where pitchers usually operate on a tight pitch count. That wasn’t an issue for Mazza, who threw just 85 pitches while striking out nine.
Mazza was a 22nd-round pick in the 2015 draft out of UC Santa Barbara.
