MIAMI - The ball went up high in the ninth inning, and the Giants were closing in on an upbeat flight to Los Angeles.
Then the ball came down, and so did their hopes and dreams.
But something unusual happened on the way to the Giants getting swept in Miami. They held onto a lead. Not only did they hold onto a lead, they held off the Marlins long enough to beat them 6-3 in 16 innings.
Pablo Sandoval’s two-run single broke a 3-3 tie in the 16th, and Gorkys Hernandez followed with a sacrifice fly.
