GLENDALE, Ariz. – Where some novice outfielders might be terrified by all the open space, Aaron Hill scanned the swath of green in left field and saw only possibilities.
“Oh man, it’s fun, honestly,” Hill said Monday. “Lot of diving plays meant to be made.”
Hill is a 12-year major league veteran infielder with no airs of entitlement. He’s a non-roster invitee trying to prove his versatility to win a bench role with the Giants, and that meant standing at a foreign position under a pulsing midday sun Monday afternoon.
It’s the first time the longtime Blue Jays and Diamondbacks second baseman could remember playing the outfield since his freshman year at LSU.
