The Giants announced Wednesday night they will not offer contracts to pitcher Yusmeiro Petit and catcher Hector Sanchez, making them free agents and likely ending the San Francisco careers of a 2014 postseason hero and a catcher once thought to be an elite prospect.
The decision to “non-tender” Petit is a tad surprising given how valuable he had been as a long reliever and spot starter, a 31-year-old who came within an out of a perfect game in 2013, set a major-league record in 2014 by retiring 46 consecutive hitters and pitched six shutout innings to earn the win in an 18-inning Division Series game at Washington shortly thereafter.
