PHOENIX – With their outfield already thinned by injuries at both the major league and Triple-A level, the Giants are nearing a deal with veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs.
Stubbs, 32, was released at the end of camp when he didn’t make the Minnesota Twins’ roster. He split last year between the Braves, Rangers and Orioles and is a .244 hitter over parts of eight seasons.
Stubbs can play center field, which is an area where the Giants already lacked depth before Denard Span’s left hip stiffened up. Span was out of Tuesday’s lineup against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, leaving Gorkys Hernandez to start and Jarrett Parker to play center if needed.
