SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants filled vacancies in both base-coaching boxes Monday, rounding out their field staff for next season.
Jose Alguacil is the Giants’ new first-base coach, promoted from his managerial position at Triple-A Sacramento. Phil Nevin, the former Padres third baseman, is their new third-base coach.
Alguacil and Nevin replace Billy Hayes and Roberto Kelly, both of whom were let go days after the Giants were knocked out of the N.L. Division Series by the Chicago Cubs.
Nevin, 45, spent the past three seasons managing the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate in Reno. Nevin played 12 seasons in the majors and is well acquainted with Giants manager Bruce Bochy, having played under Bochy in San Diego from 1999-2005.
