CINCINNATI – Willie Mays is a pretty accomplished right-handed hitter and center fielder. But he’s turning 86 years old today. He’s given enough to the game.
So the Giants looked elsewhere to add an offensive spark to their outfield. They purchased the contract of Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Sacramento and designated Drew Stubbs for assignment.
Ruggiano has five hits in his last nine at-bats for Sacramento. Given the Giants’ lean situation, that was enough to entice them to swap out personnel. Stubbs was 2 for 22 with nine strikeouts in 10 games with the club.
Ruggiano is not exactly the wave of the future.
