There is a good reason the Giants have not named their hitting coach yet. He has been in the Astros dugout for the entire month of October — and was Wednesday night during Game 7 of the World Series.
The Giants have hired San Francisco native Alonzo Powell, the Astros’ assistant hitting coach, as their hitting coach to replace new bench coach Hensley Meulens, The Chronicle confirmed.
Boston reporter Evan Drellich first tweeted the news during the World Series.
Powell’s hiring further signals that the Giants are seeking to bolster a metric approach to hitting. The Astros use advanced statistics as much or more than any other team.
