SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants believed struggling outfielder Aaron Altherr could reverse his fortunes in San Francisco, but after taking just one at-bat with the club, Altherr is headed to join the New York Mets.
Just two weeks after claiming Altherr off waivers from Philadelphia, the Giants announced that Altherr is on his way out of the organization and headed back to the east coast.
A roster crunch forced the Giants to designate Altherr for assignment on Sunday as they needed to activate starter Drew Pomeranz from the 10-day injured list. The Giants hoped Altherr would clear waivers so they could send him to Triple-A Sacramento, but a Mets team facing a sudden shortage of outfielders jumped at the chance to add Altherr on Thursday.
