SAN FRANCISCO–After recording his first major league hit in the Giants’ 6-4 win over the Rays on Saturday, utility player Connor Joe described his last two weeks as a “whirlwind.”
The whirlwind will continue for Joe as the Giants designated him for assignment Monday after acquiring first baseman and outfielder Tyler Austin from the Minnesota Twins. Austin was 1-for-4 this season before the Twins designated him for assignment.
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi acquired Austin in exchange for minor league outfielder Malique Ziegler, who opened the year with the High-A San Jose Giants.
Joe is the second Opening Day outfielder to be designated for assignment by San Francisco this year as Zaidi also designated Michael Reed just five days into the season.
