The Giants traded right fielder Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees, the club announced on Friday morning. In return, the Giants received infielder Abiatal Avelino, who was ranked the Yankees' No. 23 prospect by MLB Pipeline and right-handed pitcher Juan De Paula (No. 26).
McCutchen, 31, hit .255/.357/.415 with 15 home runs for the Giants this season, his first with San Francisco after the Pirates traded him in January for right-handed reliever Kyle Crick, Minor League outfielder Bryan Reynolds and international bonus slot money.
While the Giants had an eye toward returning to the postseason in 2018 following a 98-loss campaign in 2017, the club entered Thursday seven games back in the National League West, and eight games back in the NL Wild Card standings, making a deal to send the five-time All-Star and 2013 NL Most Valuable Player elsewhere before Friday's waiver trade deadline a viable option.
