Giants closer Mark Melancon will start the season on the disabled list, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.
Melancon, signed to a four-year, $62 million contract prior to the 2017 season, had surgery last September on his right forearm. The Giants said he was placed on the 10-day DL with a right elbow flexor strain. Top-of-the-rotation starting pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija were placed on the disabled list earlier in spring training by the team.
Reyes Moronta, a right-handed reliever who pitched in seven games as a rookie for the Giants in 2017, will replace Melancon on opening day roster.
