Giants close to signing outfielder Melvin Upton Jr.

SAN DIEGO — The Giants, their vulnerability in the outfield exposed over the season’s first five games, are close to completing a minor-league contract with former Rays, Braves and Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., a major-league source said.

The deal would not be completed until Tuesday. Upton would need to pass a physical.

Upton, 32, is the older brother of Tigers oufielder Justin Upton who hit 20 home runs combined last year for the Padres and Blue Jays. Toronto release him after spring training.

Upton is completing a five-year, $75.
