Giants can't hold off A's in wild late innings

SAN FRANCISCO -- Pinch-hitter Jake Smolinski's three-run homer highlighted a five-run outburst in Tuesday night's eighth inning for the Oakland A's, who outlasted the San Francisco Giants, 13-11.

The A's, who won both games in the two-game series against their cross-bay Interleague rivals, also scored four runs in the sixth inning. But the Giants responded with their own four-run rally in their half of the sixth, fueled by All-Star candidate Brandon Crawford's bases-loaded triple, to jump ahead, 8-5.

Then Giants reliever Cory Gearrin walked the first two batters he faced in the eighth inning, setting up Marcus Semien's RBI single.
