Now batting for the Giants: third baseman Pablo Sandoval.
The team announced Saturday it has placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the seven-day concussion list and purchased the Triple-A contract of Sandoval, the prodigal son, who rejoined the organization last month after the Red Sox cut him.
In an even more surprising move, reliever Goerge Kontos, one of the longest-tenured Giants, is no longer with the team. The Pirates claimed him on waivers.
Sandoval is expected to start Saturday night’s game against the Diamondbacks, assuming he arrives in time from Omaha, where Sacramento is playing. The Giants face a rigth-hander, Taijuan Walker, who sent Buster Posey to the concussion list with a beaning during the April 10 home opener.
