CHICAGO — When the Giants added right-handed pitcher Jandel Gustave to their 40-man roster on July 18, the transaction appeared more like a clerical error than a wise decision.
Gustave hadn’t appeared in a major league game since 2017, owned a 6.85 ERA at Triple-A Sacramento and wasn’t among the top five relievers on his minor league team.
A month after Gustave’s name surfaced in an unlikely roster move, the Dominican Republic native has emerged as one of the Giants’ best relievers.
“You look at the stuff and it plays,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “97 (miles per hour), he’s got the slider, he’s throwing strikes.
