SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — General manager Bobby Evans and his staff should compete in the Summer Olympics with the gymnastic skills they’ve displayed in building the Giants roster without pushing them over the $197 million luxury-tax threshold.
In their latest and likely last significant move, the Giants have reached a fiscally creative multiyear agreement with reliever Tony Watson, among the majors’ best left-handed setup men, who used to deliver leads to closer Mark Melancon when they were teammates in Pittsburgh.
The Dodgers looked past a decline in Watson’s numbers last season and acquired him at the trade deadline.
