BOSTON - Manager Bruce Bochy made big waves June 30 when he dumped the designated hitter and had Madison Bumgarner hit for himself in a game at Oakland. Bumgarner responded with a leadoff double that ignited a six-run inning against left-hander Dillon Overton.
Do not expect that again Friday, when Bumgarner starts the series opener at Yankee Stadium. Bochy said Tuesday he expects to use the DH against Masahiro Tanaka.
"I think we're seeing three right-handers," Bochy said. "Not that (Bumgarner) is a matchups guy. But with our situation now, I'll probably DH one of our left-handed hitters.
