SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Giants added a seasoned arm to a bullpen competition light on experience, signing former Diamondbacks and Phillies right-hander David Hernandez to a minor league contract.
Hernandez passed a physical just in time to finalize the deal and participate in the club’s first workout for pitchers and catchers in Tuesday. He’d make $1.5 million if he makes the big league roster.
The 31-year-old Sacramento native, whose fastball topped out at 96.4 mph last season, will provide right-handed competition with Derek Law, Hunter Strickland, Cory Gearrin and George Kontos.
“He has seven years of experience and we do have a young bullpen, relatively speaking,” Giants GM Bobby Evans said.
