SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants, adding late-inning experience to a crowded field of relievers, have signed former Diamondbacks setup man David Hernandez to a minor-league contract, general manager Bobby Evans confirmed.
The Giants know Hernandez well. The 31-year-old Sacramento native spent four years with Arizona, ordinarily pitching the eighth inning but sometimes the ninth. He has 20 big-league saves.
The Giants are attempting to right a bullpen that blew a majors-leading 30 saves last year. They added the biggest piece early in the winter, signing closer Mark Melancon. But the rest of the bullpen is short on big-league experience.
