Final: Padres 5 – Giants 4 (box)
It looked like there could be hope. It felt like there could be hope. Hell, it even felt like there should be hope. The Giants were making progress this week, inching ever-closer to the first-place Dodgers in the West. The deficit was down to six games with the four-game series against LA looming next week. Then, Matt Kemp punched the Giants in the face and suddenly it doesn’t look (or feel) like there could (or should) be any more hope. Jake Peavy pitched his ass off Wednesday night against his former team, carrying the streaking team through six scoreless innings, only to see the much-needed win snatched right out of his grasp after a bullpen implosion the Giants desperately couldn’t afford.
