NEW YORK - The Giants had as many as 20 active pitchers in September and submitted a wild-card roster with 11. That meant some difficult conversations with guys who played a role in reaching the playoffs.
Notable omissions included right-handers Cory Gearrin, Jake Peavy and Matt Cain, and left-hander Josh Osich.
Peavy and Cain were not surprises. Peavy gashed his foot on a pair of scissors in a household accident and Cain had all but disappeared from game action. Cain joined Barry Zito in a rare and undesirable club: player with nine-figure contracts left off a postseason roster.
