SAN FRANCISCO – Giants bench coach Ron Wotus hoped his major league managing opportunity might come with the Washington Nationals. But if he had to lose to anyone …
Well, Dusty Baker is the man who brought him to the big leagues in the first place, right?
“I’m happy for Dusty,” said Wotus, after attending Brandon Crawford’s news conference on Wednesday. “He’s a tremendous baseball man and I think his record speaks for itself. I’m happy to see him back in the game.”
Wotus has interviewed with the Rays, Pirates, Dodgers and Mariners over the years – he lost out to Lloyd McClendon in both Pittsburgh and Seattle – and by all accounts he has impressed ownership and baseball officials each time.
