Evan Longoria scratched with ankle injury, Pablo Sandoval to start

PHOENIX–Giants’ third baseman Evan Longoria was just starting to find his timing at the plate, which makes the news that manager Bruce Bochy delivered Tuesday tougher for club to handle.

Longoria tweaked his left ankle while tracking pitches during a pregame bullpen session for Giants pitcher Derek Holland.

“That’s all he was doing, but somehow he just tweaked it,” Bochy said. “I don’t know how.”

Longoria dealt with a left ankle injury this spring that sidelined him for nearly a week, and Bochy said Longoria will likely be out for a couple of days.

Pablo Sandoval will start in Longoria’s place and hit fifth against D’Backs lefty Patrick Corbin.
