Bidding for Mel Ott’s 1948 uniform: $47,000

Related Topics: Mel Ott, Willie Mays

Hall of Famer Mel Ott was the Giants’ career home run leader and owned the National League homers record, at least until Willie Mays came along.

Ott’s number 4 is retired, but his uniform still is around. At least a uniform he wore in 1948, the last year he managed the New York Giants. His jersey, pants and stirrups also were preserved and are being auctioned off as a set.

All yours for a mere $47,158. At least that was the latest bid as of Friday morning. According to SCP Auctions, bidding will close Saturday.

“I know some of the items are very rare, but maybe they’ll mean a whole lot more to fans than us in some ways,” said Melissa Loria, who’s Ott’s great granddaughter.
