Belt returning to SF, faces possible surgery

SAN DIEGO -- Facing possible surgery on his right knee, Giants first baseman Brandon Belt was scheduled to return to San Francisco on Wednesday night to be examined by team doctors, manager Bruce Bochy said.

Though Belt had expressed hopes of finishing the season on the active roster, Bochy said that any procedure the 30-year-old undergoes "most likely" would be season-ending. That means Belt could have surgery in the next several days, since the regular season ends Sept. 30.

Bochy said that Belt will undergo an MRI as well as the doctors' scrutiny, which will help determine his next step.
