SAN DIEGO–Joey Lucchesi is one chill dude.
But what the Newark, California native and Padres rookie has accomplished is anything but chill.
“It’s storybook, quite frankly,” Lucchesi’s first college coach, Steve Friend, said.
On Sunday, Lucchesi will make his fourth career Major League start when he takes on the San Francisco Giants. He won’t feel added pressure facing a Bay Area baseball team, partly because Lucchesi grew up an A’s fan, and partly because that’s just who he is.
“They said he had ice water in his veins and with us, he always had a slow heartbeat,” Friend said.
