ST. LOUIS – In his introductory news conference after signing a $62 million contract, a sum he commanded because of his All-Star track record as a closer, Mark Melancon stepped in front of reporters.
And he blew it.
He dropped the news that right-hander Bryan Morris, his former bullpen mate with the Pittsburgh Pirates, had an agreement to join him with the Giants. It was an honest mistake. Melancon, in his excitement, didn’t realize that the contract was still pending medicals.
“We actually had an agreement before Mark signed,” Morris said. “But when he announced it, yeah, I wasn’t expecting him to do that.
