All-Star eavesdrops: Bumgarner the scout, Bumgarner the surfer?

The buzz from Monday’s All-Star workout day at Petco Park:

* A Japanese reporter told Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner about Shohei Otani, a two-way player in Japan. The reporter said Otani pitches like Yu Darvish and hits like Hideki Matsui. “Sounds like a pretty special player,” Bumgarner said. “We need to sign him.”

* Somebody actually asked Bumgarner if he had been to San Diego. “Three times a year. We play the Padres,” he said in all seriousness. The same person asked if Bumgarner surfs. Might have been a first. “No,” he said.
