After initial read on MRI, Giants concerned about Will Smith’s elbow ligament

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Giants were in the process of compiling their information on left-hander Will Smith’s ailing elbow Tuesday morning, but the initial read is not an optimistic one.

Smith’s MRI exam showed some issues with the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow – structural concerns that had not showed up in an image taken earlier in the spring, GM Bobby Evans said.

Smith was traveling to San Francisco on Tuesday to be examined by team orthopedist Dt. Ken Akizuki, Evans said. The Giants also were awaiting the arrival of head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner, who had been assisting with the Netherlands club that was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic with a loss to Puerto Rico on Monday in Los Angeles.
