The San Francisco Giants were supposed to contend! They’d hoped to contend! We figured that hey, maybe, they’d contend! If this is contention, then we need another word for it.
The team spent all offseason doing the best they could to put them in position to contend — not merely create the appearance of contention. I had issues with Matt Chapman as a goal, but the additions of Chapman, Soler, Jung Hoo Lee (aww), Robbie Ray, Jordan Hicks, and Blake Snell were, in the aggregate, a very strong flex of “Hey, we want to win.” But there’s that old John Wooden quote, “Don’t mistake activity for achievement,” and if I’m resorting to tired old cliched quotes, then you know that things haven’t worked out for the Giants or any of us watching them this season.
