SAN FRANCISCO — When Giants’ third base coach Ron Wotus made one of his boldest decisions of the season on Tuesday, it was easy for Wotus’ aggression to be misconstrued.
After Brandon Belt waltzed home from third base on an Evan Longoria double into the left field corner, Wotus made a surprising call to wave second baseman Joe Panik home in an effort to help the Giants score the go-ahead run.
Panik started his journey at first base and wound up crossing home plate after Padres left fielder Wil Myers and shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr. botched a relay to the plate.
