The San Francisco Giants announced Thursday that they have signed outfielder Denard Span. It's a three-year, $31 million contract for Span that also includes incentives.
Span had reportedly been holding out for a multi-year contract. He had interest from teams like the Nationals and Orioles before signing with the Giants. There were concerns about his hip that may have scared off other teams.
Span last played for the Nationals, who declined to give him a $15.8 million qualifying offer. Signing him won't cost a draft pick, which helped to get him signed before players like Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes.
Span will turn 32 in the February and is on his third MLB. He played in just 61 games for the Nationals last season because of the hip injury. He is a career .287 hitter who has topped 20 stolen bases four times in his eight seasons.
The deal is contingent on Span passing a physical.
