The San Francisco Giants are still searching for another pitcher to bolster their rotation. The team missed out on Zack Greinke, but already added Jeff Samardzija. That leaves them a bit tight on money to add a high-priced starter and the Giants lack the prospects to swing a trade for a big-time pitcher.
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports the Giants have interest in Wei-Yin Chen and it makes sense. The lefty won't command as much money as other free agents on the market, but is a solid starter.
Chen is just 30 years old and is coming off two straight solid seasons for the Baltimore Orioles. Chen posted an 11-8 record with a 3.34 ERA for Baltimore last year, but the Orioles might be forced to let him walk with slugger Chris Davis likely to get a massive contract.
Chen has struggled with allowing home runs at times in his career, but the Giants' home park tends to help prevent home run. Chen has posted a 3.44 ERA over the last two seasons and has improved his ERA and WHIP each of the last two years.
He was projected to get a 5-year, $80-million deal this offseason. That's likely near the top of the price range for possible starting pitching additions for the Giants.
