Two outs, bottom of the 12th inning, runner on second, tie game. That was the situation last night when the Giants' Juan Perez smacked a first-pitch slider to dead center field. It looked like a walk-off double, but Padres center fielder Will Venable got on his horse and saved the game this fantastic diving catch.
The Padres scored two in the 13th to win 5-3, and Venable earned a polite applause from Giants fans on his way off the field.
So good was the catch, and in such a dramatic situation, that it reminded many of Gregor Blanco's miraculous catch to preserve Matt Cain's perfect game last year.
I'll give the nod to Blanco, but Venable's has to go down as the play of the season thus far.
