The Giants won their first game of the season on Tuesday as Madison Bumgarner led them to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bumgarner pitched 8 scoreless innings, during which he retired 18 in a row, and threw 101 pitches, 76 of which were strikes. He issued no walks during the standout performance.
The win came as a relief to fans after the Giants lost their first game to the Dodgers on Monday. I can attest to the extra relief those of us Giants fans who live in Dodger territory felt (though for the record, the Giants lost the first game of the season to the Dodgers in 2010, and we all know how that turned out).
Tonight Tim Lincecum will take the mound in hopes of taking the series against the Dodgers, and proving that he can once again be dominant. After a rough season last year, and a shortened spring training due to blister issues, Tim is back and rearing to go. He’s coming with a new look (those long locks are gone!), and a new attitude.
Though exhibition games don’t count for anything, I got to see Tim pitch against the A’s last Thursday night. The outcome of the game certainly didn’t speak for his performance. Though the runs were attributed to him, I enjoyed seeing Timmy return to the mound with an air of confidence that was lacking at the end of last semester. Only time will tell whether or not he can keep it up, and the fans are anxious to see whether or not he’ll be sticking around for years to come.
