The Giants just keep winning. After sweeping the Astros, they took the series with the Braves 2-1, winning 5 of 6 games since the All-Star Break. They’ve now extended their lead in the National League West to 2.5 games over the Dodgers, and they don’t look like they’ll be slowing down any time soon. It’s the second half, they’re ready to go, and they’re looking to run away with the title.
The Phillies, on the otherhand, are sitting comfortably in last place in the National League East, 13.5 games back from the Nationals. Despite a rough first half to the season, they are coming off of a series with the Dodgers, in which they went 2 for 3, winning 4 of 6 games since the All-Star Break. Both teams are coming out of the break strong, and both teams are looking to win.
Tim Lincecum will be first to take the mound against the Phillies this afternoon. Lincecum struggled through the first half of the season, but is coming off of a great game against the Astros. Though Lincecum didn’t get a decision in the game, he pitched 8 shutout innings, and recorded 11 strikeouts. His performance in that game solidified his start in this one, and hopefully showed a turn around for him in the second half of the season.
With Hector Sanchez on the 15 day disabled list, the Giants called up catcher Eli Whiteside from Triple A Fresno. Whiteside, who played 82 games for the Giants last year, has experience catching Lincecum. With Whiteside behind the plate, Posey is free to move down to first, which will give the Giants offense more depth. Hopefully the offense can produce runs, and take the pressure of off Lincecum as much as possible.
If the offense produces, and Lincecum can continue showing he can control the ball, I predict game one of the series will go to the Giants. If the offense falls flat, or Timmy returns to his first half form, all eyes will be on Cain to pick up the slack on Saturday. Lucky for us, he doesn't seem to be all that bad under pressure.
