The SF Giants were one of the teams in on Jon Lester this offseason before he signed a mega-deal with the Chicago Cubs, but they also had a Plan B which didn't work out.
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal (via MLB Trade Rumors), the Giants put out feelers this winter in regards to a potential Cole Hamels trade:
The Giants, after failing to land Jon Lester in free agency, talked to the Phillies about Cole Hamels. The teams obviously did not have a match, but the Giants are fairly deep in young pitching, and the Phillies also targeted infielder Matt Duffy as a secondary piece. Now it's always possible that the Giants could revive the talks, given the questions about their rotation. But the Phillies are looking for at least one elite prospect, and the Giants might not have such a player.
The Giants are also linked to New York Mets starter Dillon Gee in trade rumors, but he's not nearly the impact candidate that Cole Hamels could very well be by the Bay.
