In a recent column for his website, Gammons Daily, legendary baseball writer Peter Gammons suggests that several Major League Baseball general managers see the San Francisco Giants as a likely trade fit for the Tampa Bay Rays' Ben Zobrist.
To Gammons, such a move could also act as a precursor to the team signing veteran free-agent righty James Shields:
If, as several GMs think, the Giants are going to trade prospects for Ben Zobrist, would they hold into what’s left and sign James Shields as a free agent?
If the Giants do acquire Zobrist from the Rays, they'd likely move the talented utility man ahead of Gregor Blanco on the left-field depth chart. He'd also be a candidate to spell Casey McGehee when he needs a day off at third base.
Zobrist posted a .272/.354/.395 slash line in 2014 with 10 home runs, 52 RBI, and 10 stolen bases in 654 plate appearances.
