The San Francisco Giants have been linked to Tampa Bay Rays infielder Ben Zobrist since last season's trade deadline, and the chatter continues to get louder as the Giants' options begin to dwindle.
Here's Peter Gammons with "several GMs" take on a potential Zobrist deal:
If, as several GMs think, the Giants are going to trade prospects for Ben Zobrist, would they hold onto what’s left and sign James Shields as a free agent?
The James Shields speculation is fodder for a different article, but it's interesting to see that general managers around the league almost view a Zobrist trade to the Giants as a mere formality.
However, as SBNation's Grant Brisbee is quick to remember us, "it's just a rumor, a Gammo-bomb in the middle of a different topic."
Yet, one gets the sneaking suspicion that if several GMs see it as an inevitability (and with another Giants target, Asdrubal Cabrera to sign with...oddly, the Rays), there's likely plenty of meat to this particular bit of speculation.
