Apparently, the many feats of Albert Pujols don't measure up to what Melky Cabrera has done thus far in May. At least, that's what second baseman Ryan Theriot had to say.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Theriot, who played with Pujols on the Cardinals. With one game to go in the month, Cabrera has 50 hits, one more than Willie Mays' best of 49 in May of 1958.
Though May is coming to a close, the Giants are hopeful that Cabrera's hot streak can continue into the summer months. They've begun to close the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers, now just 5.5 games back and 1 game back in the wild-card race.
During the sixth inning of Tuesday's game, Cabrera hit a weak grounder down the third-base line that Arizona's Josh Bell let roll, hoping it would turn foul. Somehow the ball rolled slowly past the bag for a fair ball. This is how we know the baseball gods are truly looking out for Cabrera this month.
With outfielder Matt Kemp returning for the Dodgers, Cabrera and the rest of the Giants hitters will need to remain hot if they hope to close the gap by the All-Star break. But before the month of May becomes a part of the past, Cabrera will look to add to his hit total and help the Giants earn a win against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. With Tim Lincecum struggling this season, any amount of run support is crucial.
Cabrera currently leads the league in hits (77) and multi-hit games (25).
