Melky Cabrera carried the Giants offense through the month of May, helping the team close the gap on the NL West leading Los Angeles Dodgers. His magical month is one of the best ever by a Giants hitter and bolstered his case to become an All-Star this season.
Cabrera racked up 51 hits in 29 games in May, tying Randy Winn's team record for hits in a month. Winn accomplished the feat in September of 2005. Starting the season with the Seattle Mariners, Winn played the first 102 games for the club. He was traded to the Giants and turned a remarkable corner to close out the season. He played significantly above the level he had been at for the previous portion of the season.
Before May, Cabrera had been playing well. There had been signs of great potential throughout his young career, causing the Yankees to give him full-time duties as a 22-year old. Last season, during which Cabrera was with the Kansas City Royals, he hit .305 for the season, with 18 home runs and 87 RBI. He was hitting .300 coming out of April. To many, this surge came as no surprise.
During the month, Cabrera hit an atmospheric .429 and had 17 RBI. He had 15 extra-base hits including three home runs and five triples.
His teammates believe that he can continue his hot streak, and with the Dodgers in sight, the Giants will need his bat to make a push towards the top of the division.
