Dan Uggla's stay in the Bay Area was an extremely short one, as the San Francisco Giants released the three-time MLB All-Star after the team's 7-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, the team were also said to have released struggling outfielder Tyler Colvin, but Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Colvin was actually optioned to Triple-A Fresno.
Per Haft, "striving for stability at second base, the Giants were rumored to be pursuing middle infielders such as Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera and the Chicago Cubs' Emilio Bonifacio in trade discussions, according to multiple reports."
Dropping Uggla only adds fuel to that speculation with Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline just hours away. Uggla went 0-for-11 with six strikeouts and three errors in four games as a Giant. Collectively, San Francisco second basemen are hitting just .176 this season - tied for dead last in the National League.
Colvin leaves for Fresno after .223 with two home runs and 18 RBIs in 57 games. He also went 1-for-14 as a pinch-hitter.
